KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 29 – A team of undergraduates from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has achieved a prestigious 2nd Runner-Up finish at the national-level KitaHack 2026. Held at Sunway University, the competition is widely regarded as a premier annual hackathon organized by Google Developer Groups (GDG) on Campus Malaysia. The event challenges university students to engineer cutting-edge AI solutions that align with the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The UTM Airost team, consisting of Ling Lee Hom, David Chan Keng Hoe, and Chew Jian Hui from the Faculty of Computing, earned their place on the podium through the development of TrustLens. This high-precision, AI-driven document analysis system was designed specifically to identify fraud and technical anomalies in an era where digital forgery is becoming increasingly sophisticated.
A Comprehensive Shield Against Fraud

TrustLens stands out for its versatility and depth. The system is capable of analyzing 11 distinct types of documents, including sensitive materials such as bank statements and legal contracts. To ensure that no detail is overlooked, the team programmed the system to perform up to 46 automated risk checks. This high level of scrutiny provides a thorough and reliable result that traditional manual checking often fails to achieve.
At the core of TrustLens is a sophisticated AI Assistant powered by Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). This advanced technology enables the system to go beyond simple “pass/fail” results; it can interpret complex analysis outcomes and respond to specific user queries with contextual accuracy. This makes the platform accessible to both casual users and professionals who need to understand the “why” behind a flagged document.
Human Expertise and Community Awareness
Recognizing that technology is most effective when paired with human judgment, the team incorporated an Expert Review feature. For cases that demand deeper validation or carry high stakes, forensic specialists can be called upon to provide professional assessments directly through the platform.
Furthermore, TrustLens includes an innovative Alert Zone page. This feature acts as a community-driven defense mechanism, surfacing documents that have been flagged as highly suspicious by multiple users. By sharing these red flags in a centralized space, the system helps raise public awareness and proactively curbs potential fraud before it can spread.
Celebrating Technological Excellence
This achievement represents a major milestone for the UTM AIROST club and shows the growing caliber of applied artificial intelligence within the university. The success of Ling, David, and Chew highlights UTM’s role as a leading hub for digital security innovation and technological excellence.
The UTM community extends its warmest congratulations to the three students for their exemplary performance. By addressing the UN SDGs through practical, high-impact engineering, these students have demonstrated that the next generation of Malaysian innovators is well-equipped to lead the charge in the global digital economy. Their project, TrustLens, serves as a model for how AI can be utilized to build a safer and more transparent financial future for all.
